2017 Legislative Assembly Summary

On October 20th and 21st, over 200 PTA representatives from across 11 regions in the State of Washington gathered for the 2017 WSPTA Legislative Assembly in Tacoma. Robin Zaback and Barby Taheri represented Canyon Creek PTA as voting delegates. Delegates adopted 4 Resolutions as well as adopting 7 Issues to be supported on the 2018 WSPTA Legislative Platform. The Platform provides a timely list of legislative priorities for WSPTA and its members to support through its grassroots efforts. Delegates were also offered opportunities to further their advocacy training, participate in panel discussions, and network with other PTA advocates from across the State.

Adopted Resolutions:

  • Mental Health Needs for Children
  • Trauma Informed Care
  • Increasing Access and Affordability of Post-secondary/Higher Education Degrees and Certificates
  • LGBTQ+ Inclusion

 

Legislative Issues added to the “Also Supported” list for the 2018 Legislative Platform (in alphabetical order):

  • Addressing the Teacher Shortage
  • Best Practices for School Meal Policies
  • Career Connected Learning, CTE & Stem
  • Dual Credit Equality & Support
  • Equity for Highly Capable
  • Preventing and Mitigating the Impacts of Gender-based Violence
  • School Construction and Class Size Reduction
